Solar planning panel:

Solar Panel Planning permission is not usually required, as you are permitted to make certain minor changes to your home without needing it, and installing a solar panel comes into this category. These changes are called 'permitted development rights' - however, if you live in a listed building or in a conservation area you may need consent, as these development rights do not apply.

In all cases we advise that you contact your local authority planning department for advice and also check if building regulations might apply.

When you contact your local authority planning department, they will require some information from you, this information will include:

  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Inform them that you wish to install an energy saving solar panel on your roof
  • Solar panel length is 1.7 metres
  • Solar panel with 20 tubes width is 1.56 metres
  • Solar panel with 30 tubes width is 2.26 metres
  • Solar panel tubes stand 91 millimetres above surface of roof
  • Top 130 millimetres of solar panel (manifold) stands 130 millimetres above surface of roof
  • There are three possible outcomes from this telephone conversation with the council representative:

  • You will have been informed that you have 'permitted development rights' and you can go ahead and get your solar panel installed
  • You will have been informed that you do not have 'permitted development rights' and you need write to the council with details of the panel and where it is to be installed (Example solar panel planning permission letter)
  • You will have been informed that you need solar panel planning permission
